This 1971 Plymouth GTX (chassis RS23U1G109851) is described as a numbers-matching 440/727 TorqueFlite car, and decoding the chassis number indicates desirable options like the Air Grabber hood and power discs/steering are correct as well. We’d probably describe it as butterscotch, but Bahama Yellow paint is original factory spec as well. The car looks good throughout, with a tidy, stock vibe inside, out and under the pop-up scooped hood. Find it here on eBay in Elmer, New Jersey for $42,900 OBO.
Chrysler’s B-body cars were produced from 1962 until 1979, but except for one-year-wonders Daytona and Superbird, these fuselage styled cars boasted the most dramatic styling. Flowing lines paired with a big loop-style front end, and the options list ran thick with spoilers, stickers, scoops, wings and searingly bright colors. The distinctive grille treatment and menacing Air Grabber hood looked like nothing else on the road then or now. Interestingly, the car wears dog dish caps and steel wheels instead of the Magnum 500 wheels more commonly seen on GTX’s.
Corporate fuselage styling is on full display from the rear, and bulges over the wheels looks pretty tough even if 15″ rubber struggles to fill them. The Go Wing looks neat, factory exhaust tips are nicely styled, and the GTX badge is actually a sticker.
The interior looks very good, and we’re pleased to see brown upholstery instead of the more common black. Nicely optioned with a remote driver’s side racing mirror, a factory AM/FM radio, and front and rear seat belts, we think this would be a nice place to spend time slap-shifting the console-mounted lever. That said, we wish a Tuff Wheel had been speced.
Under the Air Grabber hood is a claimed-matching-numbers 440ciV8 backed by a 3-speed 727 TorqueFlite automatic. Down slightly on power for 1971, this 4-barrel model was still rated at 370 HP. Twist is passed to a 3.91 geared 8 3/4″ rear end, which sounds to run an open diff. The engine bay looks quite correct apart from the battery, and power steering and power disc brakes will only help the driving experience.
